On the morning of October 30th, Dr. Lori-Anne Brogdon, Head of School of Mounds Park Academy (MPA) in the United States; Mark Segal, Upper School Principal; and Dou Lianhui, Head of Vanke Meisha Academy, visited Shenzhen Vanke Bilingual School. Guo Runchen, Assistant to the Head of Vanke Meisha Academy, and Wang Yiyu, Administrative Specialist, accompanied them. Our Principal Yang Fan, Director Zhou Jinfeng, and Teacher Niu Chuyuan accompanied them and participated in a discussion.

Do Right.”
Mounds Park Academy is located in St. Paul, Minnesota, USA. Founded in 1982, it is a PreK–12 independent private school with about 570 students and ranks second among private schools in Minnesota. Its motto is brief and powerful: “Dream Big. Do Right.”
During the campus tour, the guests came to the covered ground-floor activity and game area. Dr. Brogdon was attracted by an AI interactive game screen and excitedly invited the two principals beside her to try the ball-throwing game together. She played with focus and energy, praised the interactive experience, and the atmosphere became relaxed and lively.

At 9 a.m., it was the morning recess for Grades 1–6. The children doing running exercises saw the American principals by the playground and waved and greeted them cheerfully while running: “Hello, teacher!” The principals then walked among the younger children who were jumping rope, watching them rise and fall lightly to the rhythm, their little faces beaming with concentration and excitement. Some children kept jumping while looking on curiously; others stopped, looked up at the smiling American principals, and happily exchanged high-fives. Accompanied by cheerful music, the guests also did some stretching exercises and shared a wonderful time exercising with the children.

The guests then visited the Maker Workshop. The workshop displayed PBL project works designed by the children through interdisciplinary inquiry. Dr. Brogdon stopped before an introduction to cars—learning material for the eighth-grade new energy vehicle project. She carefully read the history of automobile development and talked about her family’s car when she was a child and the first car her father gave her, joking that it might have been the starting point of her love for cars and machinery. In that moment, the cars in Dr. Brogdon’s childhood memories formed a vivid echo across time and space with the children’s new energy vehicle project before them.

In the AI classroom, seventh-grade students were having a design class. The children explored the composition and assembly of cars and tried to make small cars move. Dr. Brogdon was very interested and sat beside the students to watch them assemble parts. The students spoke confidently and naturally with the principal in English. Their topics ranged from daily life and homework to hobbies and scientific concepts; once they started talking, they could not stop, and both teachers and students were immersed in the conversation. On the other side, Principal Segal and Principal Dou also watched the students’ operations with great interest, talking with them from time to time and asking about their thoughts on how the small car ran and their understanding of the concept of these“systems.”

The guests also visited, in turn, a first-grade Pinyin class and a ninth-grade independent learning class. In the art classroom, the children were learning artist Xu Bing’s “Square Word Calligraphy”—an artificial writing system that recombines English letters into square Chinese-character forms. At departure, seventh-grade students presented works specially prepared for the guests; in these works, the students wrote the mottos of Mounds Park Academy and Meisha Academy in this artificial script. The principals then went to the library, where second-grade students were having a reading class. Seeing the American principals, the children immediately gathered around; some asked, “Where are you from?” and others said, “Let me show you this book.” Principal Segal interacted with the children with great interest. The children’s enthusiasm and the principals’ smiles intertwined, adding a vivid and warm touch.

At the subsequent discussion meeting, our school’s student and teacher representatives exchanged views with the American guests. Student representatives Jiang Xintong, Pan Guangliang, Mao Yirui, and Yang Jingyi each asked questions. When asked what quality American schools value most in cultivating students, Dr. Brogdon answered: critical thinking—independent thinking, not being swayed by external evaluations, and being able to decide one’s own life. Principal Segal added that equally important is “not being defined by anyone.” This coincides with Vanke Bilingual School’s daily practice—we likewise encourage children to stay curious, dare to ask questions, think independently, set ambitious goals, and develop problem-solving skills and creativity through project-based learning.

During the teacher representative Q&A session, Teacher Zhang Jialai asked about performance opportunities for Mounds Park Academy’s jazz band. Dr. Brogdon explained that the school arranges performances with clubs, and the on-campus cafeteria and café are also available for student performances. Speaking of the American school’s i-Term—a full week of research with no grades, and student-chosen topics—Teacher Li Runze also introduced our school’s inquiry-based learning and project-based learning. Chinese and Western schools take different paths, but both are thinking about how to help children learn to conduct independent research in real-world contexts. Teacher Wu Yihan asked about classroom organization and student collaboration in Individuals and Societies. Dr. Brogdon explained that the high school offers sociology, law, political science, and other subjects, and students complete collaborative tasks together in group discussions. Principal Yang also introduced our school’s approach: offering economics, philosophy, history, and other courses, encouraging students to visit museums, and discussing issues in a global context.

At the end of the event, the guests went to the theater to meet and exchange with all of the ninth-grade students. Principal Dou Lianhui encouraged the students to develop themselves as early as possible in the direction you are good at and persevere in your efforts. This message was both encouragement for the ninth-grade students and a warm and powerful conclusion to the exchange. May the students carry an international perspective that integrates Chinese and Western elements, move forward steadfastly on the track they love, strive to explore in real-world contexts, and grow into better versions of themselves.
