During the speech under the national flag, Yang Ruoyu (Athena) and Ding Ziyao (Eric Ding) from Class 8I delivered a presentation commemorating the anniversary of the founding of the Chinese Young Pioneers. Beginning with its establishment on October 13, 1949, they reflected on more than seven decades of dedication and the passing down of revolutionary traditions from generation to generation. The two students explained that the red scarf worn by Young Pioneers symbolizes a corner of the national flag, representing the sacrifices of revolutionary predecessors and the ideals and convictions upheld by generations of young people. Living in an era of peace and prosperity, today's youth are encouraged to appreciate the value of peace, carry forward the spirit of previous generations, and preserve this revolutionary legacy as they grow. They emphasized that patriotism and responsibility are reflected in the choices we make, the actions we take, and the perseverance we demonstrate in everyday life.

The two speakers then called on all Young Pioneers to put these values into practice. They encouraged their peers to share the history of the Communist Party of China, revolutionary stories, and the achievements of national heroes at revolutionary heritage sites, turning General Secretary Xi Jinping's guidance and encouragement into meaningful action. They also urged students to offer support to those in need, spread warmth and kindness among their peers, and develop resilience and practical abilities through learning and everyday experiences. By holding themselves to the standards of a Young Pioneer, students can carry forward this proud tradition, make the most of their youth, and grow into young people with ideals, a strong sense of responsibility, and a determination to work hard.

Following the student presentation, Ms. Chen Jiamin, a member of the school's Party Branch Committee responsible for organizational affairs, delivered a talk on current affairs. Drawing on the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, she began with a simple question: Why do single-celled green algae move towards light? This question led scientists to discover a light-sensitive protein in green algae. By introducing this protein into neurons, researchers developed a technique that allows specific nerve cells to be precisely activated or inhibited using pulses of light. The technology has been explored as a potential approach to restoring partial vision in patients with certain retinal disorders and has also advanced research into the neural mechanisms underlying depression, Alzheimer's disease, and pain.

Ms. Chen emphasized that discoveries capable of changing the world often begin with a small observation or a simple question that someone chooses to investigate. Through careful observation, bold hypotheses, repeated experimentation, and international collaboration, scientists have transformed curiosity into breakthroughs at the forefront of scientific research. Connecting these ideas with the IB Learner Profile, she encouraged students to develop a global perspective, think critically, remain curious, embrace different viewpoints with an open mind, and apply their knowledge to real-world challenges. She reminded everyone that inquiry is part of everyday learning, beginning with each question we ask and every idea we explore.

Next, Director Chen Nuosi spoke with students about naming the school's beloved mascots, Wan Xiaoshuang. Since the school's founding, Wan Xiaoshuang has embodied its aspirations for the future and its spirit of exploration, accompanying students throughout their learning journeys. In response to students' discussions about the mascot's gender, the school carefully considered different opinions and eventually introduced two versions distinguished by blue and pink color schemes. Both mascots are now awaiting their own names, and the school has officially invited all teachers and students to participate in the naming process. Director Chen explained that each naming initiative offers a meaningful opportunity for students to express themselves, unleash their creativity, and become active participants and co-creators of the school's evolving story.

Appendix I: Student Speech

Respected teachers and dear fellow students,

Good morning!

I am Athena from Class 8I, and he is Eric Ding.

Bathed in the morning sunlight and with the national flag flying proudly above us, we gather today to celebrate October 13, the anniversary of the founding of the Young Pioneers of China. As a student of Vanke Bilingual School, I feel a deep sense of pride and respect whenever I look up at the solemn Five-Starred Red Flag and see the bright red scarf around my neck.

On October 13, 1949, the Chinese Young Pioneers was officially founded. For more than seventy years, its spirit has been passed down from generation to generation, inspiring young people to follow their dreams with devotion and determination. The red scarf we wear is a corner of the national flag. It represents the sacrifices of those who came before us, carries forward their ideals and beliefs, and remains one of the most precious and honorable symbols for Chinese young people. From the moment we put on the red scarf, we take on the responsibilities and duties of a Young Pioneer.

Today, the days of war are behind us, and we are fortunate to live in a time of peace and prosperity. Growing up under the national flag and in an age of hope, we do not need to face the battlefields of the past. Yet we still have a responsibility to carry forward the spirit of previous generations and take on the responsibilities of our time. For Young Pioneers today, patriotism and responsibility are never empty slogans. They can be seen in every choice we make and every action we take.

Dear young pioneers, from the moment we pledged to “Be Always Ready,” we made a promise to take on responsibility and make a difference. So, how can we, as Young Pioneers in the new era, bring new honor to our red scarves? The answer lies in our actions. When we share the history of the Communist Party of China, tell stories of the revolution, and honor our heroes at revolutionary heritage sites, we are putting the General Secretary Xi Jinping’s words of encouragement and guidance into practice. When we reach out to fellow Young Pioneers in need, we are spreading the warmth and care of our organization. As we look to the future, may we all continue to live up to the spirit of the Young Pioneers and show our sense of responsibility and commitment through our actions.

Young people should aim high, and the spirit of the past should continue to inspire the future. The anniversary of the Chinese Young Pioneers is not only a day to remember where we began, but also a day to inspire us to keep moving forward.

Today, I call on all Young Pioneers to carry forward this proud tradition, make the most of our youth, and live up to the expectations of our time. Let us always follow the guidance of the Communist Party of China and strive to become young people of the new era with ideals, a strong sense of responsibility, and the determination to work hard. May the red scarf around our necks always shine brightly with pride!

That’s all! Thanks for your attention.

Appendix II: Current Affairs Speech by Ms. Chen Jiamin

Respected teachers and dear students,

Good morning!

Today, let us turn our attention to the recently announced 2026 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, awarded for optogenetics. This groundbreaking scientific achievement began with a seemingly simple question: Why do tiny green algae actively swim towards light?

German scientists Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel were curious about how single-celled algae detect light. They discovered a special protein in green algae that acts like a natural light-controlled switch. Inspired by this discovery, American scientist Karl Deisseroth introduced the protein into neurons, enabling scientists to use a beam of light to switch specific nerve cells in the brain on or off with remarkable precision. This technique is known as optogenetics. Researchers have explored its potential to restore partial vision in people with certain retinal conditions and have used it to investigate the neural mechanisms involved in depression, Alzheimer's disease, and pain.

Have you noticed something remarkable about this Nobel Prize-winning achievement? It did not begin with an elaborate experiment. It began with one simple question: Why do green algae move towards light? Great scientific inquiry often starts with curiosity and the willingness to ask questions. The scientists paid attention to this small phenomenon, observed it carefully, developed bold hypotheses, tested their ideas repeatedly, and collaborated across national borders. Their efforts ultimately led to a discovery that transformed neuroscience.

The IB encourages us to become inquirers who remain curious and actively pursue research. It also encourages us to develop a global perspective and understand that knowledge transcends borders, while humanity faces shared challenges in health and the life sciences. The collaboration of three scientists from different countries offers a powerful example of intercultural understanding and a sense of global community. Knowledge extends far beyond our textbooks, and many major breakthroughs arise from asking questions about ordinary things around us.

Some of you may feel that the Nobel Prize is far removed from your everyday lives. Yet the ability to inquire is something we practise in our classrooms every day. Asking why when we observe a phenomenon, having the courage to question assumptions, and carefully designing ways to test our ideas are all expressions of the scientific spirit. The IB also reminds us that learning involves developing the ability to inquire and think critically, keeping an open mind, respecting diverse perspectives, and using what we learn to respond to real-world problems.

Dear students, the world is full of mysteries waiting to be explored. I hope you will nurture your curiosity, have the courage to ask questions, and pursue inquiry with enthusiasm. Become learners who observe carefully and think deeply. Stay grounded in the present while keeping a global outlook. Strengthen your abilities through learning, and use your thoughts and actions to become internationally minded learners with a strong sense of responsibility. May even your smallest questions help illuminate the future ahead of you. Starting today, let us regularly ask ourselves: Did I ask a question today?

That concludes my sharing. Thank you, everyone!
