In 2026, Shenzhen will host the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) meeting. Taking this as an opportunity, Vanke Bilingual School in Shenzhen launched a series of interdisciplinary PBL (Project-Based Learning) practices across all grade levels centered around this international event. After a semester of group inquiry, outstanding student projects were presented at the school theater, fully demonstrating the students' global perspectives and comprehensive practical abilities. As the city steps onto the world stage, the children of VBS are also finding their own ways to understand the land beneath their feet and engage in dialogue with visitors from afar.

Grade 1: Warm-Hearted Little Hosts

The first-grade children started from "home"—first learning about their families and observing their communities, then turning their gaze to the wider world. They were curious: How can we make travel more convenient for APEC friends arriving from afar? What should a friendly family's three meals look like? What are the signature foods of each APEC member economy? With these questions, the children researched, conducted interviews, drew maps, and gradually pieced together the outline of what it means to be a "host." Some groups studied the "20-minute living circle"—exploring parks, convenience stores, and bus stops near the school to see if guests could experience Shenzhen's convenience and warmth within walking distance. Other groups created an illustrated proposal calling on everyone to "be civilized and polite; love the city and protect the environment; embrace tolerance and spread kindness; communicate well and share joy." From food maps to community-friendly guides, the children used the simplest ways to represent Shenzhen.

Grade 2: I'm a Tour Guide for the Animal Ambassadors

In the eyes of second-graders, the city belongs not only to humans but to all living beings. They transformed into "animal tour guides," designing exclusive Shenzhen sightseeing routes for APEC's animal diplomats. The children crafted beautiful "ID cards" for the animal ambassadors, noting habitats, habits, and "diplomatic specialties," and also organized an APEC member specialty expo, bringing products from various countries into the school. Behind these playful expressions lies an acceptance of diverse cultures and goodwill toward all living things. With innocent hearts, the children built soft and genuine bridges between the city and the world.

Grade 3: Junior Ambassadors of New Energy, Speaking for the Future

The third-graders' inquiry journey began with little question marks: Are robots helpful helpers, or will they make us overly dependent? What exactly is discussed at the APEC meetings? Has Shenzhen's new energy infrastructure truly made the city better? With these questions, the children ventured into communities, investigated the placement of charging stations, observed solar facilities, and searched for answers in real-world settings. Building on this, they focused on Shenzhen's new energy industry's cooperation with the Asia-Pacific region, using models and environmental posters to envision a low-carbon, green urban future, responding to the challenges of our time from a youthful perspective.

Grade 4: Little Traders, Touching the Global Pulse

Fourth-grade children became "little traders," starting with everyday objects and tracing their origins to create "Asia-Pacific commodity maps." They also produced recommendation booklets, using text and images to tell the stories behind each product. At a simulated trade summit, the children took on different roles, sharing knowledge about economics and trade, and exploring the mysteries of tariffs and logistics. Some groups even turned their attention to the oceans, performing skits to advocate for the protection of marine ecosystems and the harmonious coexistence of humans and nature. From goods to ecology, from trade to responsibility, the fourth-graders discovered the interconnectedness of the world through their inquiries.

Grade 5: City Promoters, Showcasing Pengcheng to the World

Fifth-grade students took on the role of "city promoters," developing multi-faceted promotional plans for Shenzhen from the perspectives of cuisine, technology, and ecology. Some groups studied Shenzhen's transformation from a small fishing village to an international metropolis, creating timelines to map the city's forty-year growth. Others compared Shenzhen's and Tokyo's transportation systems, reflecting on the planning logic behind "convenience." Some asked "what is a 'super-charging city'?" and researched the coverage and efficiency of Shenzhen's new energy vehicle charging network. Others explored "whether Shenzhen's dining scene is truly international," visiting restaurants and collecting data to provide evidence-based answers. Through illustrated promotional booklets and cultural products bearing the city's imprint, the children turned their love and understanding of Shenzhen into gifts they could share with the world.

Grade 6: Understanding APEC, Understanding Shenzhen's Opportunities

After completing the PBL theme "Unforgettable Elementary School Life," sixth-graders quickly turned their attention to APEC-related research. Their inquiries progressed layer by layer: What kind of organization is APEC? How does it affect the world? Why is this year "Shenzhen Year"? What makes Shenzhen qualified to host such an important international meeting? Driven by these questions, the children consulted materials, watched documentaries, and interviewed teachers, gradually sorting out APEC's development history and Shenzhen's unique strengths—from being a pioneer of reform and opening-up to serving as the core engine of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, from a hub of technological innovation to a leader in green development. Through this inquiry, the children came to a preliminary understanding of the profound impact international organizations have on global development and planted a seed of "city and world" in their hearts.

Grade 7: Entering Asia-Pacific Cultures, Discussing Win-Win Cooperation

Seventh-grade students formed groups to study the cultural characteristics of APEC member economies, covering languages, cuisines, festivals, industries, and customs. They created "Friendship and Cooperation Handbooks" by hand, using words and pictures to document the unique aspects of each culture, and shared their findings through display boards across the school. Through preparation and presentation, the children gradually came to understand that cooperation between nations is not just an exchange of policies and interests, but a respect for and dialogue between different cultures. Grand concepts like "openness, inclusiveness, mutual benefit, and win-win cooperation," often found in official documents, were transformed by the children into tangible details and heartfelt warmth.

Grade 8: Simulated APEC Summit, Young Diplomats Take the Stage

The eighth-grade PBL was a true "hands-on experience." Students took on the roles of diplomats from various economies and members of the press corps, engaging in in-depth research and simulated negotiations around the three core topics of "openness, innovation, and inclusiveness." Representatives from each economy conducted thorough investigations from their country's perspective: Singapore focused on the digital economy, the United States prepared position papers on trade and technology, Australia explored green transition, Brunei advocated for marine cooperation, Thailand emphasized agricultural upgrading, and China, as the host, learned to listen and seek consensus, while Canada and Japan showcased their strengths in diversity and industry.

This simulated summit allowed eighth-graders to grow through the processes of writing position papers, refining English speeches, and engaging in mock negotiations. The moment they said, "Our delegation believes..." cooperation ceased to be an abstract concept and became a genuine dialogue requiring listening, compromise, and co-creation.

Since its founding in 2018, Vanke Bilingual School has consistently made PBL project-based learning a core pedagogical feature, offering dedicated weekly PBL-STEAM+ courses to create a platform for in-depth learning within real-world problem contexts. This APEC-themed PBL showcase not only served as a concentrated presentation of a semester's inquiry outcomes, but also as a vivid reflection of the school's PBL teaching philosophy in practice. When textbook knowledge connects with the pulse of the city, and when learning occurs within real issues, children gain not only answers, but also the courage to explore independently, the ability to collaborate, and a global perspective rooted in China. These meaningful inquiry experiences will ultimately become the most valuable assets on their growth journey—wherever the future takes them, they will carry this confidence and vision with grace.
