Teachers were present to ensure safety and order, yet they fully returned the authority of judgment and examination to the children and the market itself. Prices set too high meant empty booths, forcing the children to huddle together and discuss "discounts and promotions"; items beyond budget required the ability to choose and wait; and transactions made could not be undone—teaching them the importance of keeping promises and honoring commitments. Polite hawking, courteous bargaining, orderly queuing, and conscious cleanliness—these small rules written in the plan gradually became ingrained habits through countless interactions.
