On the afternoon of July 9, the gymnasium of Vanke Bilingual School was buzzing with energy—calls of hawkers, sounds of bargaining, children's hearty laughter, and the crisp clinking of coins intertwined into a unique campus symphony. All students from Grades 1 to 8, carrying long-anticipated excitement and forgotten treasures from home, gathered for this green appointment named "Childhood Bazaar·Old Things Adventure." This was not merely a playful exchange game, but a vivid practical lesson that bridged textbooks and real life, connected sweat with laughter, and integrated labor education with a preliminary understanding of market dynamics.

I. Bearing Meaning Through Objects: Understanding Labor and Cherishing Through Transactions

Every used item carries a folded moment of time, waiting for a pair of small hands to unfold it anew. Neatly folded VBS uniforms, plush toys bearing childhood memories, well-read extracurricular books, and handmade items reborn through the children's own efforts of mending, dyeing, and painting—they were no longer "junk" in the corner, but "treasures" filled with memories and affection. In the week leading up to the event, labor classes were already bustling with activity: younger children learned to stitch up old cloth toys with needle and thread, while older students explored their creativity through tie-dye and clothing transformation. Some classes even brought freshly picked minced scallions, eggplant, chili peppers from the school's rooftop farm—the fruits of months of watering, weeding, and careful observation, each droplet of sweat infused with the essence of sunshine and effort.

At the booths, young "vendors" stood tall, carefully pricing items and enthusiastically hawking their goods; among the stalls, young "shoppers" clutched their change, calculating and examining with care. From sorting items, setting prices, and creating displays, to recording transactions and reconciling accounts at the end of the day—each step was no longer an abstract term from a textbook, but a tangible reality within their grasp. Children traded goods, learning to ask, negotiate, and empathize in the process. They formed teams, divided roles, and rotated duties, experiencing the weight of coordination and trust in a group setting.

When an old book was carefully placed into a new owner's schoolbag, and when a coin felt heavier because it was exchanged with a polite "thank you," the children came to understand: labor not only creates value but also gives warmth to objects; thrift is not stinginess, but the deepest respect for limited resources. The labor class achievements displayed across the stalls silently spoke their own truth—that every planting and harvest, every cut and dye, was a vivid footnote to the principle of "making the most of everything."

II. The Market as a Mirror: Learning Rules and Empathy Through Interaction

The small marketplace acted like a clear mirror, reflecting the complexity and beauty of society. There were no standard answers here, only real choices and encounters. Teachers were present to ensure safety and order, yet they fully returned the authority of judgment and examination to the children and the market itself. Prices set too high meant empty booths, forcing the children to huddle together and discuss "discounts and promotions"; items beyond budget required the ability to choose and wait; and transactions made could not be undone—teaching them the importance of keeping promises and honoring commitments. Polite hawking, courteous bargaining, orderly queuing, and conscious cleanliness—these small rules written in the plan gradually became ingrained habits through countless interactions.

2V5A1187.JPG

2V5A1224.JPG

2V5A1177.JPG

To make it easier for the children to get change, the school set up a change exchange station at the theater entrance, stocked with small bills and coins. Children would run over with larger bills, exchange them for a handful of jingling coins, and dash back to their stalls full of energy—this small window sustained the entire market's flow of transactions and gave them a tangible understanding of what "making change" really means.

But this bustling marketplace was far more than a mere buying-and-selling game. It was a silent yet powerful fusion of labor and economics education. VBS's labor curriculum emphasizes developmental appropriateness and multi-dimensional learning, using everyday lessons, themed activities, and skill competitions to provide students of different ages with what they need most. In class, they plant, sew, dye, and repurpose, creating tangible results with their own hands. In economics, they start by learning about money, then progressively understand the logic of production and exchange, making choices within limited budgets. As they grow older, they learn to track income and expenses like little "household managers," gradually expanding their focus from the personal to the social—exploring the division of labor and the meaning of work, and beginning to grasp the connections between "labor" and "economic growth." Today, these two subjects truly met in the "market" spread out on picnic blankets—labor gave value to goods, and economics allowed that value to circulate and be exchanged.

What was especially moving were the unexpected moments of warmth that emerged throughout the event. The colorful picnic blankets brought students from different classes closer together. Children of different grades sat alongside one another, freely moving between stalls, spontaneously teaming up to hawk goods and exchange treasures—sincere cooperation and kindness flowed naturally among them. Behind the impressive trading figures lay not just the physical efforts of watering, weeding, dyeing, and sewing in labor class, but also the precious friendships built through mutual support and generosity.

III. Fun as a Vessel: Planting Seeds for the Future Through Immersive Experience

As the flea market in the gymnasium drew to a close, the sharing session in the classrooms brought the residual warmth of the event to another climax. Some children described how their "sales strategies" helped them "clear their inventory," others proudly displayed their "spoils," while still others seriously reflected on their own pricing mistakes... Their teachers guided them to elevate these buying-and-selling experiences into a deeper understanding of a low-carbon lifestyle, the value of teamwork, and the dignity of labor.

2V5A1203.JPG

2V5A1241.JPG

Some children even took the initiative to calculate the environmental benefits of "giving old things new life": How much plastic could an old shirt turned into a cloth bag save? How much paper could a book that was re-read conserve? This marketplace contained no expensive items but was filled with the most precious form of growth—it made "environmental protection and thrift" more than just a slogan on the blackboard, integrating it into every negotiation and every satisfied transaction. It brought the concept of "simultaneous development of five aspects of education" down to earth—into fingers stained with soil, faces flushed with communication, eyes lit up with appreciation, and the willingness to take a step back in an act of kindness.

Old objects circulated, stories continued, and growth quietly unfolded through these heartwarming encounters. With this practice full of warmth and depth, Vanke Bilingual School not only added a bright memory to the children's summer but also planted a seed in their hearts—a seed of sustainable living and human warmth. One day, it will surely grow, bathed in sunlight, into a lush and thriving future.
