Liang Yu (Class 8E): The Tale of a Grain of Sand. In her speech, she adopted the perspective of a single grain of sand to narrate Shenzhen’s journey across time. She depicted the quiet fishing villages along Dapeng Bay, the roaring construction sites of the city’s early development, and finally the clear glass display cases seen in city museums. Through the wanderings and transformation of this tiny grain of sand, she illustrated the magnificent metamorphosis of barren beaches to a modern metropolis filled with high-rises. Her speech captured its grand urban changes, letting one grain of sand carry the city’s memories and warmth. During the Q&A session, a classmate asked, “What do you believe embodies the Shenzhen Spirit?” Liang Yu replied: “The foundation of the Shenzhen Spirit is hard work — the tireless efforts of countless builders. Its core is inclusiveness, bringing people together from all corners of the country, just like grains of sand. Its legacy lies in the younger generation who keep telling Shenzhen’s story and sustaining the city’s endless progress.”

Lin Shuo (Class 8C): Voyage to the Starry Sea, Ode to Mankind. Drawing inspiration from Arthur C. Clarke’s sci-fi classic 2001: A Space Odyssey, Lin Shuo’s speech ‘Voyage to the Starry Sea, Ode to Mankind’ explored humanity’s eternal quest to explore the cosmos. He recounted pivotal scenes: such as ancient apes learning to wield tools after touching the monolith, the tense standoff between the Discovery One crew and AI HAL 9000, and the astronaut Bowman transcending the star gate to become the Star Child. Narrating this landmark “bible of science fiction,” he distilled its timeless core: every leap forward in human civilization stems from daring to challenge the “impossible” and refusing to stand still. Weaving sci-fi narratives with real aerospace history — from Yuri Gagarin and China’s space station to Neil Armstrong and the Zhuque rocket — he showcased humanity’s enduring spirit of exploration. When asked what sets 2001: A Space Odyssey apart from other sci-fi works, Lin Shuo answered: “Its uniqueness lies in its profound portrayal of human curiosity and courage amidst the universe. It never flaunts technology; instead, it captures humanity’s quiet, persistent bravery when facing the unknown.”

Pan Guangliang (Class 8G): Reflections on Labor Day. Pan Guangliang’s speech ‘Reflections on Labor Day’ traced the origins of Labor Day and re-examined the modern meaning of the motto “Labor is Glorious.” He recounted the 1886 struggle of Chicago workers fighting for an eight-hour workday, and shared his distress at the casual dismissal of labor in daily life — such as hearing parents warn children that poor academic performance would condemn them to manual jobs. He sought answers through personal experience: volunteering to sweep fallen leaves in the community and taking over household chores to understand his mother’s daily toils. Observing exhausted construction workers and commuters huddled in subway carriages, he reminded the audience that every honest line of work deserves recognition and respect. “Labor is glorious” is never just a slogan, but a belief to hold deep in our hearts. His closing heartfelt declaration of “Labor is glorious!” drew thunderous applause.

Li Mingze (Class 7E): Youthful Resolve to Ride the Winds of the Times. Centered on a sailing PBL field trip at Dameisha, Li Mingze’s speech ‘Youthful Resolve to Ride the Winds of the Times’ chronicled a journey of chasing wind and waves under the blazing sun. He and his teammates studied boat structures together, tightened ropes and steadied their vessel amid choppy waters. Though they did not win the competition, overcoming their inner fears proved far more valuable than any prize. He reflected that young people are meant to forge ahead through storms; growth never follows a smooth path, and temporary setbacks are merely unwritten pages in our youth journals. His vivid sailing anecdotes embodied the fearlessness and resilience of modern teenagers. A classmate asked: “How should young people navigate rapid technological progress in the AI era?” Li Mingze responded: “We should keep learning and preparing while there is still room to grow.” Pressed further on applying a sailing spirit to studies, he added: “Persist through hardships, and remain unyielding against pressures from all sides.”

Wang Yilin (Class 8E): Flowers. Wang Yilin’s speech Flowers used blossoms as a thread to meditate on life and its meaning. She traced the earliest presence of flower pollen in 60,000-year-old Neanderthal burial sites, then moved on to Monet’s water lilies, Van Gogh’s sunflowers, Shakespeare’s roses and the lotus fragrance depicted by Li Qingzhao. She explored how flowers evolved from simple plants into vessels for human emotion, then introduced the philosophical concept of “the utility of the useless.” Flowers cannot feed us or serve practical functions, yet this very “uselessness” lets their beauty remain pure and free — much like the ailanthus tree in Zhuangzi’s writings, spared from being cut down precisely because it served no practical purpose. Flowers are precious because they bloom quietly without needing to prove their worth, open to countless interpretations yet unapologetically themselves.

5.JPG

During Q&A, students raised multiple thought-provoking questions: Asked about the meaning of “the utility of the useless,” she said: “When pursuing something, do not fixate on results. Embrace the process itself. Even if the outcome falls short, the joy and growth gained along the way are its true value.” Asked whether humans assign meaning to flowers or strip them of freedom, she replied: “A flower’s inherent meaning is simply its own blooming.” Asked about flowers’ significance in her personal growth, she shared: “Flowers brighten everyday moments — such as gifts for birthdays and get-well wishes — they enrich our lives beautifully.”

Jiang Yuming (Class 7C): Rethinking Our Battle Against Cell Phones. With sharp insight, Jiang Yuming’s speech ‘Rethinking Our Battle Against Cell Phones’ analyzed the root causes of teenagers’ phone addiction. He argued the issue is not merely a failure of self-discipline, but two deeper struggles: lacking hobbies more fulfilling than scrolling screens, and feeling aimless in studying, thus relying on phones to escape anxiety and apathy. He shared his personal transformation, trading short-video binges for high-speed train photography and 100-kilometer cycling trips. Drawing on ‘The Art of War’, he stated the key to overcoming phone overuse lies in long-term vision: broadening one’s horizons and finding meaningful passions, rather than fighting phones head-on. His speech balanced philosophical depth with genuine teenage candor. When asked if he ever wanted to quit during his 30-kilometer walks, he smiled and replied: “Walking and cycling let me admire the scenery — it’s tiring, yet deeply joyful.”

Liu Qinghao (Class 7G): Resilience Hidden in Youth Journals. Liu Qinghao’s speech ‘Resilience Hidden in Youth Journals’ opened a window into his journey from being confused to determined. Starting with entering middle school, he Qinghao recalled the steeply rising academic difficulty and filled his journal with helplessness and self-doubt; late at night, he poured all his frustration onto paper. One day, he re-read a quote from Thoreau copied on the journal’s title page: “I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately,” which calmed his restless heart. From then on, he jotted down every genuine emotion, happy or sad. Self-encouragement such as “Hardship forges character” and quiet joy after small progress filled his pages. Writing became a soothing remedy, witnessing his transformation from being timid to having inner strength. When invited by a judge to share a specific time that journaling calmed his mood, he explained: “Writing down troubles is a healthy release. I always feel much lighter once I finish a journal entry.” He reminded the audience that true growth means pressing forward despite fear, and walking steadily even when the road stretches endlessly ahead.

Zhuang Nuanqi (Class 7I): The True Meaning of Friendship. Zhuang Nuanqi’s speech The True Meaning of Friendship used a journal entry to reveal the purest form of companionship. She recounted her low spirits and loss of confidence after failing a Grade 7 math quiz, hiding away from her classmates after seeing pages of red correction marks. Her deskmate quietly sat beside her, offering not empty words of comfort, but patiently breaking down geometry problems, sorting out errors and reinforcing weak knowledge points with her. This quiet, warm companionship taught her two truths about friendship: it is easy to share good times, but hard to stand by each other through hardship. True friendship is not an idle pastime, but mutual motivation and joint progress. Her sincere daily anecdotes captured the belief that teenage friendship hinges on sincerity, companionship and shared growth. When asked what defines genuine friendship, she answered: “True friends support one another, push each other to become better versions of ourselves, and stay beside each other to walk through dark days.”

Closing of the Event. All eight speakers took to the stage to receive commemorative certificates and pose for a group photo at the end of the activity. Through lenses ranging from grains of sand and sci-fi to labor, sailing, flowers, digital devices and personal journals, the students offered rich, unique interpretations of the theme “My Diary.” Some captured urban evolution through tiny natural objects; some gazed at the stars with thoughts of science fiction; some measured life’s weight with the sweat of labor; others forged youthful resolve amidst turmoil. Their heartfelt sharing proved that journals are far more than collections of words — they are spiritual sanctuaries built through passion, perseverance and courage amid daily life and constant reflection. The 73rd E-Talk concluded amid warm applause and touching moments, yet the stories of youth continue to be written in every student’s private diary.

The E-talk activity of Vanke Bilingual School is held once a week. Students can sign up to participate on their own. Both Chinese and English are accepted. The teacher arranges speakers with the same or similar topics to give speeches in the same period. The purpose is to enable students to be able to speak freely, confidently and bravely; to be good at thinking, debating, and doing research.

The stage of E-talk is open. We welcome every future teenager of VBS to come here, stand in the spotlight, and show their unique charm to the world; we encourage children to challenge themselves and break through difficulties; we believe that every child has unlimited potential. As long as they have the courage to stand on the stage, they may become real speakers.

Let us look forward to how the future teenagers of VBS will use their voices to lead us into their world and feel their enthusiasm and vitality on the E-talk stage.
