To enhance students’ comprehensive abilities in speech and expression, improve their bilingual proficiency, and empower them to take center stage, the 59th E-talk event at Vanke Bilingual School was held in the school theater on January 5, 2026. Over 100 teachers and students attended in person, while the event was live-streamed for the entire school community.

The theme of this E-talk event was “Nature and Environment”. Seven students from grades 5 to 6 delivered outstanding English speeches. They promoted green living concepts, raised awareness of environmental protection, and strengthened their sense of responsibility for safeguarding our planet. The event was hosted by Kiki Wu from class 6G and Bill Liao from class 5D, with Brandon and Michael serving as judges, providing detailed feedback on the students’ performances.

Dody Wei from class 6D gave a speech titled “Protect Our Beautiful Planet”. He vividly described the beauty of nature—a world teeming with life and miracles, offering fresh air to breathe and clean water to sustain life. Then, he pointed out the harsh reality we face today: car and factory emissions polluting the air, excessive deforestation, plastic waste polluting the oceans, animals losing their homes, and global warming. As students, he proposed four practical action suggestions: follow the “reduce, reuse, recycle” principle, save energy, plant trees and flowers, and promote environmental awareness to others. He firmly believes that if everyone joins hands, even small actions can help safeguard this beautiful planet for future generations.

The judges noted that Dody Wei’s suggestions were practical and closely related to daily life, were highly actionable, and reflected his care and responsibility for our planet. They suggested that if he could further adjust his tone and highlight key action directions, his appeal would become more infectious and achieve better results.

Micky Tao from class 6G shared on the topic of “Protecting Our Earth”, focusing on three core dimensions: “defining the environment”, “pollution issues”, and “how to save trees”. He pointed out that the environment is the sum of all elements around us, including air, water, and plants, but car exhaust, industrial wastewater, and waste pollution are disrupting this balance. Excessive deforestation also causes animals to lose their homes and for the Earth to continue warming up. He called on everyone to reduce plastic use and save energy, introducing successful cases like Amazon reforestation and China’s “Green Great Wall”, emphasizing the importance of scientific forest protection.

The judges commented: “Your sharing is logically clear, progressing from basic knowledge to problem analysis, which makes your solutions for environmental issues easy to understand. If you could add more data support to your examples, your points would be more convincing. Adjusting your speaking pace during the speech would also help the audience better absorb the core information.”

6G班何嘉美(Maggie)同学进行了题为“The Journey of a Plastic Bag”的演讲。

Maggie He from class 6G delivered a speech titled “The Journey of a Plastic Bag”. From a first-person perspective, she narrated the “life” of a plastic bag: born in a factory, used in a supermarket, carelessly discarded and ending up on streets, ditches, and rivers, before finally becoming part of the “plastic soup” in the ocean. She depicted scenes where the plastic bag witnessed fish, seabirds, and turtles in danger due to the ingestion of plastic, and specifically noted that a plastic bag might only be used for 15 minutes but could persist in the ocean for up to 450 years. For this, she called on everyone to refuse single-use plastic bags, choose minimally packaged products, and take action to change the outcome of plastic pollution.

The judges praised: “You used a personified narrative style to vividly represent the harm of plastic pollution along with a strong storytelling aspect, which left a deep impression.” Meanwhile, they also suggested that if you could accompany your speech with appropriate body language to convey urgency, it would be easier to evoke empathy and reflection from the audience.

Iris Zhang from class 6E gave a speech titled “Protect Nature”. She emphasized that “nature is humanity’s home”, stating that our survival depends on the clean water, fresh air, and food provided by nature. Then, she listed many problems caused by human activities, such as littering, water pollution, air pollution, excessive deforestation, and overuse of pesticide, and proposed corresponding solutions, including removing litter, saving water and electricity, reducing plastic use, and caring for animals and plants. Finally, she looked to the future, calling on everyone to start with daily small actions and work together to build a clean and beautiful homeland.

4.JPG

The judges commented: “Your speech has a complete structure, with problems and solutions that are full of positive energy. If you could increase eye contact with the audience during the speech, the impact would be further enhanced.”

5C班袁满(Dora)同学以“Protect Our Nature, Protect Our Home”为题进行演讲。

Dora Yuan from class 5C gave a speech titled “Protect Our Nature, Protect Our Home”. She vividly described the beauty of nature with colorful flowers, pleasant bird songs, and fresh air, then turned to point out current issues like excessive deforestation, waste pollution, and animals losing their homes. As a student, she proposed five practical action suggestions: planting trees with parents, not littering, saving water, using cloth bags for shopping, and promoting environmental awareness to relatives and friends. She believes that when small actions come together, they will surely make the Earth more beautiful.

5.JPG

The judges noted that her suggestions were specific and closely related to student life, highly practical, and refleccts the environmental responsibility of the younger generation. They suggested that if she could pay attention to tone variations during the speech and highlight key suggestions, her appeal would be more impactful, and the effect would be even better.

Sophia Tong from class 5G gave a speech titled “Flower City--Shenzhen”, starting with Shenzhen’s characteristic flowers. She introduced plants like the bougainvillea, flame trees, and kapok trees, showcasing the natural beauty of Shenzhen as a “flower city”, and conveying the environmental concept that “protecting nature means safeguarding the beauty of our home”. By detailing the shapes and pollen of flowers, she made everyone feel the wonder and preciousness of nature.

6.JPG

The judges commented: “You started with the city's landscape around us, making environmental issues more relatable to life, and the content seems innovative and unique. If you could further explain how these plants contribute to urban ecology during each flower’s introduction, and propose how we can care for them, the environmental theme would be more prominent, and the logic would be more coherent.”

Sarah Chen from class 5I shared on the topic of “Our beautiful Earth”. Starting with the “journey” of a biodegradable straw: from the forest, through human processing into eco-friendly tableware, after use, it finally returns to nature, decomposing into soil to help trees grow, ultimately forming a sustainable cycle. She pointed out that choosing biodegradable products is an important way to practice green living, and called on everyone to treat the Earth kindly and safeguard our shared home.

The E-talk activity of Vanke Bilingual School is held once a week. Students can sign up to participate on their own. Both Chinese and English are accepted. The teacher arranges speakers with the same or similar topics to give speeches in the same period. The purpose is to enable students to be able to speak freely, confidently and bravely; to be good at thinking, debating, and doing research.

The stage of E-talk is open. We welcome every future teenager of VBS to come here, stand in the spotlight, and show their unique charm to the world; we encourage children to challenge themselves and break through difficulties; we believe that every child has unlimited potential. As long as they have the courage to stand on the stage, they may become real speakers.

Let us look forward to how the future teenagers of VBS will use their voices to lead us into their world and feel their enthusiasm and vitality on the E-talk stage.
