On December 10, 2025, Vanke Bilingual School held its sixth Scientist’s Day event. As part of its activities, the school organized a unique “Nature Classroom” session, inviting Xu Hualin, an expert from the Futian Mangrove Nature Reserve, to deliver a popular science lecture titled “Tracing Feathers and Bird-Watching in the Mangroves.” Prior to the event, the school promoted the activity through various channels, and students from each class gained the valuable opportunity to attend the lecture in the auditorium through a voting and selection process.

At the beginning of the lecture, Mr. Xu introduced the topic with a set of striking data: “There are approximately 10,894 species of birds worldwide, 1,491 in China, and 451 in Shenzhen alone.” Accompanied by vivid photographs of birds, he systematically explained the classification of birds, making the morphological characteristics and ecological habits of different species easy to understand.

During the core segment on “Understanding Bird-Watching,” Mr. Xu reshaped the students’ conventional understanding of the activity. “Bird-watching is not just about ‘looking at birds.’ It is a scientific activity that involves observing the appearance, behavior, and habitat of wild birds with binoculars, while also recording and identifying species.” He particularly emphasized that “bird-watching ≠ caging birds”: “Keeping birds in cages stifles their natural instincts. What we should appreciate are wild birds flying freely in nature.”

“Why do so many people fall in love with bird-watching?” In response to this question, Mr. Xu offered a heartfelt answer: Bird-watching brings people into the wilderness and wetlands, providing a sense of achievement when discovering new species; outdoor observation helps improve eyesight and physical fitness, while also enabling participants to meet like-minded friends. More importantly, by observing the interaction between birds and their environment, one can uncover the “little secrets” of ecosystems—for example, tidal changes in mangroves directly affect the foraging rhythms of waterbirds. “When you start caring about the survival of a bird, you will naturally become concerned about its habitat. This attention will gradually turn into a sense of responsibility for conservation.” Mr. Xu’s words resonated with the students, who nodded in agreement.
During the interactive session, students asked questions enthusiastically: “How can we quickly find waterbirds in mangroves?” “Is it okay to approach a bird’s nest while bird-watching?” Mr. Xu patiently responded: “To observe waterbirds, pay attention to tidal times. For instance, Houhai Bay experiences two tides daily, and 10:00 to 13:00 is often a good time for observing waterbirds. If you encounter a bird’s nest, you should leave quickly to avoid disturbing the birds and causing them to abandon the nest.” He also encouraged everyone to start with “bird-watching right outside their doorstep”—whether by opening a window or stepping into a park, birds can always be found.

The event drew to a close in a warm and lively atmosphere. Principal Yang Fan, teacher Peng Ping, and student representative Wang Zheye took the stage together to present Mr. Xu Hualin with a school souvenir and an honorary certificate, expressing their sincere gratitude for his wonderful sharing. Amidst the applause of all teachers and students, the sixth Scientist Day event concluded.

After the event, the students’ enthusiasm remained undiminished. They lined up in an orderly manner, holding notebooks or pamphlets, and asked Mr. Xu for his autograph. This touching scene vividly reflected the love and inspiration sown in the children’s hearts by this “Nature Classroom.”

This lecture was not only a transfer of knowledge but also a vivid practical lesson in nature education. It also exemplifies Vanke Bilingual School’s commitment to its educational goal of “nurturing citizens of China with good physical health, sound personality, excellent academic abilities, patriotism, international vision and the courage to create a better future.” This year’s Scientist Day not only sparked students’ curiosity about the natural world and but also subtly cultivated their care for the ecology of their homeland, allowing awareness for environmental protection and respect for life to take root in every child’s heart.
Looking ahead, the school will continue to leverage local ecological resources such as mangroves to organize more outdoor observations and practical activities. By guiding students to connect with and explore nature, they will learn to observe meticulously, respect life, and grow into young practitioners of ecological protection who combine knowledge with action. As Mr. Xu stated at the end of the lecture: “Humans are not the sole masters of the world. May everyone, with their love for birds, coexist harmoniously with all living beings and work together to protect our beautiful home.”
