In the vast world of education, cutting-edge educational philosophies and innovative teaching methods are like brilliant stars, constantly intertwining and colliding, lighting up new beacons on the road to children’s growth. Project-Based Learning, as the core of Vanke Bilingual School’s teaching philosophy of "allowing students to experience authentic and rigorous learning," is deeply embedded in the daily teaching activities. This learning model immerses children’s learning processes in real, meaningful contexts, encouraging students to solve problems through independent exploration and teamwork. In doing so, they naturally absorb knowledge, cultivate problem-solving abilities, and enhance their overall competencies. In this vibrant semester, Vanke Bilingual School’s fifth-grade students embarked on a meaningful PBL project — "My Club Activity Space, I Decide" — which was not only an exploration of learning but also a practice of self-management and innovative thinking.

At the beginning of the semester, as the school’s club activities kicked off with excitement, the enthusiasm of the fifth-grade students was also ignited. However, due to limited activity spaces, some clubs had to share classrooms, leading to some interference between activities. To solve this problem and provide more suitable spaces for the club activities, the fifth-grade mathematics teachers cleverly integrated the mathematical knowledge taught this semester with the solution of the club activity space issue. They turned abstract mathematical concepts such as "the area of polygons" and "the area of composite shapes" into powerful tools for solving real-world problems, guiding students to experience the magic of mathematics while exploring how to reasonably set up club activity spaces.

At the start of the project, the students were faced with a challenge that was how to choose an appropriate area and accurately calculate its size. They needed to consider which pieces of information were essential when calculating area and estimate the required space based on the standard of approximately 3 square meters per person. This complex issue not only tested the students' mathematical knowledge but also made them deeply realize the key role mathematics plays in solving real-world problems.

Subsequently, the students were divided into groups, went out to measure, and discussed how to improve the accuracy of their measurements. This process was like a lively hands-on lesson, not only honing the students' practical skills but also developing their number sense. By comparing the data from different groups, the students learned how to assess the reliability and accuracy of the data, truly understanding the essence of an authentic and rigorous learning process.

During the area calculation and layout design phase, the students first learned how to calculate the areas of planar shapes and flexibly applied the methods for calculating the areas of triangles, parallelograms, and trapezoids. They cleverly solved the problem of calculating the area of irregular shapes. In their design, they comprehensively considered the characteristics of the space, the required space for club activities, and the relationship between the number of people and the size of the space, fully demonstrating their excellent spatial imagination and problem-solving abilities.

In the model-making phase, the students used lightweight clay and cardboard to carefully design models of their club activity spaces. This process not only exercised their hands-on abilities and cultivated their spatial awareness but also deepened their understanding of design concepts.

In the final presentation phase, the 10 outstanding groups selected from each class participated in a grade-level exhibition. The students confidently explained their design ideas and the mathematical knowledge they had applied. This not only developed their presentation skills but also boosted their confidence. The interactions and questions between classmates made the presentation more vivid and interesting, while also enhancing class cohesion and teamwork spirit.

In the evaluation and reflection, students mentioned "Through this PBL project-based learning, we learned how to calculate the areas of trapezoids, triangles, and parallelograms, and how to calculate the area of irregular shapes. During the exploration process, we learned how to cooperate efficiently. We understood that reasonable division of labor improves efficiency. We learned that when faced with difficulties in solving real problems, we should not give up easily but find ways to solve them."

In line with the school’s goal of "cultivating students' excellent learning abilities," the fifth-grade mathematics teachers have used PBL projects as a tool, guided by the 2024 new curriculum reforms, and have actively explored new approaches. They insist on "using PBL learning methods to solve real problems," enabling students to develop comprehensively, thus realizing the school’s philosophy of "Let our children experience the future." This mathematics PBL project successfully sparked students’ interest and enthusiasm by integrating mathematical knowledge with club activities. Through group cooperation learning, students engaged in activities such as measurement, calculation, design, and presentation. This practical process not only helped them master methods for calculating the area of polygons and composite shapes but also significantly improved their practical abilities, communication skills, application awareness, creativity, and teamwork. The school also gained a deeper understanding of the students’ needs and ideas, providing valuable insights for the future development of club activities.
