VBS News Net: To spread knowledge for eye care and prevent eye diseases or myopia, VBS held 'Eye care week' series of activities from 28th December to 31st December 2020 to disseminate eye care knowledge to parents, students and staff members.

Ms. Dong Chunyue made the speech on eye care so that students would realise that eyes were a key component of their bodies. Hence they had to maintain good positions to read and write while doing eye care exercise, minimising the time of using electronic items and exercise more.

Staff, parents and students took part in eye care knowledge contest during this week. Primary 2 to Junior Secondary 3 students answered the questions during their AI classes. Parents and teachers completed the contest online. Finally 2D, 2E, 3V, 3C, 4C, 5D, 7D, 8C, 9C won Eye Care Prize. Parents from 1G, 1O, 2F, 2C, 3V, 3F, 4C, 5D, 7D, 8C, 9D and 30 teachers won Best Guarding Prize.

Ms. Dong's speech was as follows:

The eye, the window of the soul. There has been the urge of eye care as more and more people are getting spectacles. But how? First we have to know what myopia is - it can be categorised into simple myopia and pathological myopia which are inherited from generations to generations. Simple myopia is caused by improper use of eyes in life which results in the drop in farsightedness abilities. It can be mild and developed gradually without change in eye ground. But high degree myopia would cause change in eye ground with complications of floaters.

Eyes are the most expensive cameras as each part plays a role. The wall of the eye is comparable to the camera's dark chamber, the pupil is the aperture, the lens is the advanced lens and the retina is the light-sensitive part.

So how do we protect our eyes? Other than sitting in an upright position, increasing outdoor exercise periods, we must focus on our diet by increasing the comsumption of food rich in protein and vitamin intake - fish, milk, citrus and  of food. We have to avoid dessert and sugar.

We must consult ophthalmologists from professional hospitals if precursors of myopia are present. If ophthalmologists say we need spectacles, we have to get the right ones from qualified stores. Wear your glasses close to your eyes, not on the tip of your nose or halfway down the bridge with lens at the same level and distance from the eyes. The distince between vertex of the lens inner surface and the front vertex of the cornea should be around 0 - 15 mm. The centre of frame should be collinear with the pupil. After wearing the glasses, you should feel comfortable without any special pressure and pain. Temples should not be too long or too short.

We should practise the eye care from bottom of our hearts. Wish everyone to stay away from myopia.
