VBS News Net: Shenzhen Education Bureau organised the 16th Internet summer camp for students from 25th June to 26th November to improve the IT capabilities and applications skills as well as facilitating integrated innovation of IT and teaching. Lai Junhong from 8D was selected by Shenzhen Education Technology Centre to take part in the Youth Programming Fiesta held at Tencent Building, his group F1 received the excellent team award. Lai Junhong was selected ‘Excellent Coder’ by Tencent Coding.

Themed VBS students participated in each category. AI Programming competition was jointly organised by Shenzhen Education Bureau and Tencent. After online and offline programming competitions, Shenzhen Education Technology Centre selected excellent students to join the two-day Fiesta.

Lai Junhong, Shen Yaozheng, Ye Chenghuai, Yang Jia, Liu Yiran and Lu Yuming participated in this competition. All of them were VBS Programming Electives students. Most of them had zero knowledge on C++ as they entered VBS, so far they could solve real world problems by programming. As they competed against high school students, the AI Elective classes had yielded fruit. Lai Junhong represented VBS in this Fiesta as they participated in C++/Python projects.

Excellent students from all camps across the country (Shenzhen, Jiangxi, Yunnan, HK, Macau, Huizhou etc.) gathered at Tencent Building to listen to WeChat product manager's sharing and cooperated in groups to apply programming in solving specific questions. Lai Junhong was allocated to Group F1 which was awarded 'Excellent Team Award'.

Student's reflection

Apply science and technology to create a better life by Lai Junhong

It was an honour to be part of the Youth Programming Camp organised jointly by Tencent Education and Tencent Game Dream Plan at the second half of this year. I was very lucky to have this opportunity to take part in this two-day camp, learning knowledge of AI, Programming, innovation and development of my generation.

I enjoyed the programming from the game and competition these two sections during the Fiesta. As I discussed with my teammates to improvise strategies so that we use our codes to devise a sandplay. This trained our teamwork, data collection skills and logical thinking. I realised that C and Python were irrelevant but deeply related to our lives. It would be recognised by the public if we popularise programming knowledge more and put it into real life closely.

It was an AI and innovation era. The innovative mindset was not to be missed since the evolution period of tech products had accelerated. I also broadened my horizons in this activity as I saw many things in life could be updated to serve humans better such as updates in personalisation and intelligence.

What impressed me the most was the idea 'break the thinking boundary' stated by Mr Cui, product manager of WeChat Pay during the Fiesta. I believed this was the innovation mindset that my generation ought to have, we had to trust ourselves to apply science and technology to create a better life by placing our faith in it.
