VBS News Net: To integrate learning and sharing into the working style and improve the professionalism of VBS life teachers, Life Teachers Department held a meeting on 30th September. Each life teacher reported task completion, progress, reflection and rooms for improvement in terms of their work.
To clarify the doubt which newly recruited life teachers have in work and existing issues, experienced staff offered some strategies.
Ms Zhang Li expressed her view on anxious parents from Primary One,'it is common to see parents having anxieties on their children during the transition from kindergarten to primary school. Some parents are sensitive and could pass the anxiety to children. I have spoken multiple times with parents of each student. For some students, I take the initiative to communicate with parents more frequently so to put down their anxieties, helping students to acclimatise studies in primary school.
On the issue of making a balanced diet habit, Ms Zou Xueping always told the students about the harms of having an imbalanced diet. She also made a record on students' eating habits and awarded one sticker to students who finished eating rice and two dishes whereas two stickers for students who cleared their foodplates. Cooperated closely with teachers, parents could grant their children's wish if a sufficient number of stickers were collected. This has motivated students to treat their diet seriously.
Ms Zhang Li spoke again on ways to achieve quick assembly,' clear instructions are given upon assembly training, boys and girls form a line each. One student is in charge of other three students for every four students in a line. 1C has had a significant improvement in forming the line.'
Teachers had the consensus on meals collection to maintain the order at canteen. Students enter from the door at the back and exit from the front, while the routes for getting soups and meals are specified to avoid collisions. Teachers also created a six-step dining procedure to faciliate eating in manners - 1.clear the table, 2.wash your hands, 3.collect the trays, 4.have meals, 5.put the tray at collection point, 6.clear the table again.
Supervisor Ms Huang Yajuan concluded the meeting, 'Being life teachers are all about details which matter a lot. A sense of responsibility is not abstract, but reflects on details of each task. Second, life teachers play a key role in nurturing students at the crucial site for teaching norms - the school, hence they must pay closely attention to students' emotional needs and variations, as well as listen to what students have to say. Life teachers must set good examples by everyday actions, be mindful of own words and behaviour.
New life teachers had valuable experience from this meeting.
